More and more writers are being inundated with some form of AI in their daily practice. Whether you have strong opinions on the need for or fate of AI, it has definitely begun to make it’s mark in a big way.
Many writer’s have had the unfortunate experience of pitching to a client only to be told that, rather than hire the professional, the client will “just throw something together using AI” because it’s cheaper/ easier/ less time consuming… the list goes on.
Sometimes, for the client, using an AI generated blurb is all they need for the initial place holder on their website because they don’t have the time to be a client and a business owner in that moment. But is that all AI can do?
My foray into AI – Canva
As my first foray into AI creation, I decided to start with a simple program that was recommended to me by multiple colleagues which has been available since June of 2012, Canva.com.
Overall, I have to say that (after a few false starts and a YouTube tutorial later) I do see the appeal in creating simple snippets with it like the one above.
The software is simple to use and has a lot of free templates, backgrounds, and design tools that make a newbie feel like they can put simple things together in a short amount of time. Does it replace the expertise of a professional? Absolutely not.
In the same way that ChatGPT can’t produce reliable (or even competent) written work, Canva is not going to replace the guidance or skill that you find working with a professional designer.
Was it fun to use? Absolutely! Would I use it again? Maybe for something small but not for anything business related. For professional work, I would rather trust a designer so I can focus on doing what I am passionate about. Writing!
